TISZTELT KURATÓRIUM!

Váli Dezső a legnagyobb élő magyar festők egyike. Munkásságát igen régóta, 1969 óta kísérem figyelemmel. Több kiállítását én rendezhettem. 1981-ben egy könyvet írtam róla, amely azonban az akkori politikai viszonyok között nem jelenhetett meg.

Mostani retrospektív kiállítása számára készülő katalógus tanulmányát én írtam. Munkásságát a kortárs hazai és európai művészettörténet szemszögéből értékelem. Divatirányokhoz nem kötődő, egyéni útját rajzolom föl, mely a mai magyar művészetben külön fejezetet képez. Tizedik éve fest egyetlen témát: a Műterem sorozatot. Ez a sorozat a külvilág és az én viszonyával foglalkozik a meditáció eszközeivel.

A katalógus másik részében a kortársak, a magyar szellemi élet reprezentánsai tisztelegnek egy-egy rövid írásukkal Váli művészete előtt.

Tisztelt Kuratórium!

Mint a Magyar Művelődési Minisztérium felügyelete alá tartózó két legnagyobb magyar kiállítási intézmény: a Műcsarnok és az Ernst múzeum igazgatója örömmel ajánlom Váli Dezső kérését a t. Kuratórium figyelmébe. 1997 őszén rendezzük meg retrospektív kiállítását az Ernst múzeum termeiben. Sajnos, költségvetésünket a kormány a szűkös gazdasági körülmények miatt igen szűkösre szabta, ezért az ilyen fontos kiállításhoz feltétlen szükséges katalógus költségeihez igen szerényen tudunk csak hozzájárulni. Váli Dezső festészete mindenképpen indokolttá tenné munkásságát méltóképpen megjelenítő katalógus megjelentetését. Rendkívülivé teszi ezt a készülő művet, hogy a magyar vezető értelmiségiek legjava, írók, költők fejezik ki tiszteletüket a kötetben Váli Dezső munkássága iránt.

Dear Grant Selection Committee!

In January 1993 I received the financial support of Pollock-Krasner Foundation. Why I need Your help once again is an unusual story.

In the Museum Ernst will be my large scale retrospective exhibition in October 1997.

The catalogue for the exhibition is beeing written by 49 authors.

Introduction of an oeuvre (95 pages with 110 coloured reproduction.) Written by Kata Nagy Ph. D. University Professor of History of Art.

48 short essays with full page illustration. This part is written by well known artists, criticals, writers, poets, intellectuals, but there are matematician and professor of law among them.

The cost of production seemed to be insured. One large Hungarian bank has undertaken the rest of the costs, 21.400 $, exchange for a series of 9 large paintings. Everything seemed to be right.

Than some unexpected thing happened (just as usual). In December 1996 the Museum of Contemporary Art was founded in Budapest. The Director of this Museum attached importance to my serie of pictures placed in her institution. She couldn't pay for it. This Museum which I have fought for so many years asked for it so I gave the to it. For free.

The catalogue is now ready to print, but the money has lost. I have hardly any chance to collect it, my incomes are not on this level.

That's why I request your help and assistance.

Dezső Váli is one of the greatest living painters in Hungary. For a long time, since 1969 I've kept an eye on his works. I have organised his exhibitions on several occasion. In 1981, I wrote a book about him, but it didn't come out due the political situation of that time.

He asked me to write an introduction for the planned catalogue of his retrospective exhibition. I appraise his work from the wiewpoint of the Hungarian, European history of contemporary art. I am trying to show that he is not attached to any fashion, in a non conformist and unique way, creates a special chapter in Hungarian art. For ten years, he's been painting only one theme: the Atelier series. These pictures are considering the relationship of the outer word and the individual, with the means of meditation.

At the second part of this catalogue, the the representatives of Hungarian intellectual life bow before his. I truly commend Dezső Váli's request your best attention.

As the Director of the two largest Hungarian exhibition center: Ernst Museum and the Art Gallery (both under the supervision of the Ministry of Education and Culture), I recommend with pleasure Dezső Váli's request to your attention. We organise his retrospective exhibition at Ernst Museum in fall 1997. To my great regret, the government has limited our budget due to the economical circumstances, that's why we can not afford to sponsor the necessery catalogue, only to a certain extent. The work of Dezső Váli absoltely demands for the publicacion of this catalogue wich attempts to represent properly his art and his life. The peculiarity of this catalogue is that prominent figures of Hungarian intellectuel life make an appreciation of his art in short writings.

Dear Members of the Board!

Dezső Váli is among the most important and eccentric master artist in the Hungarian Fine Arts. This fact could be enough to support his life work retrospective exhibition, but in his case it is more than just a simple fact. In the center of His ars poetica is always to paint a lovely picture, and this point made him to be a master in minority, who is contrast with his neoavantgarde neoecletic collegues. He doesn't think that the great moments of art from Vermeer to Vuillard, Morandi te Klee are exceeded. He was never followed the mainstreams of commercial taste. The clears that why is so important to show Dezső Váli is considered rightly an outstanding and unique artist with his beauty-carnations and streeming panting-paintings.

It is so necessary to publish his catalogue, that's why I draw his request to your best attention.

Tisztelt Kuratórium!

Váli Dezső a kortárs magyar képzőművészet egyik legeredetibb és legfontosabb mestere. Ez a tény önmagában is elég lenne életmű kiállítása támogatásához, azonban esetünkben többről van szó. Mesterünk ahhoz a törpe minoritáshoz tartozik, aki ars poeticájának középpontjába a szép kép festését állítja, aki ellentétben neoavántgárd és új-eklektikus kortársainak zömével nem tartja túlhaladottnak a festészettörténet nagy pillanatait Vermeertől Vuillardig, Moranditól Kleeig. Egy csepp engedményt sem tesz a kommerciális közízlésnek.

Ez utóbbi magyarázza, hogy Váli Dezső eddigi életműve- noha beskatulyázhatatlan, és a divatos művészeti írók többsége által megálmodott fővonalba nehezen illeszthető, a mai magyar művészet reprezentációjának nélkülözhetetlen része.

Kiállításának nélkülözhetetlen eleme lenne egy életművét bemutató méltó katalógus egyidejű megjelentetése.

Kérelmét ezért a Pollock- Krasner pályázatra feltétlenül ajánlom.
