"STATIONS OF THE CROSS - B/90/06"
14 photomontages, 13x13 cm, 1990.

In Christian Medieval Europe, it was the custom to travel to Jerusalem on pilgrimage to atone for one's sins - to wander through the place where Christ died. Not everyone was capable of making this pilgrimage by foot, which could sometimes last several years.

Because of this, the followers of Saint Francis in the XIII century devised a way to be able to complete this rite of penance at home, in every church, without the need for distant travel. By the depiction of the stations of the Way of the Cross and Calvary, the faithful were able to make a symbolic pilgrimage.

Budapest photograps from the 1930's to represent this traditional 14-scene history were used.

 1.    JUDGES  Christ is tortured and condemned to death.
 2.    TAKING UP THE CROSS  He takes up the Cross as a sacrifice for man's sins
and starts towards the execution place.
 3.    FIRST FALL  Christ falls for the first time under the weight of the Cross.
 4.    MEETIG WITH MARY  He meets with His Mother along the way.
 5.    SIMON  A passer-by is forced to help carry the Cross.
 6.    VERONICA  A woman wipes Chist's bleeding face with her veil.
 7.    SECOND FALL
 8.    WEEPING WOMEN  Christ repudiates the weeping woman.
 9.    THIRD FALL
10    STRIPPED NAKED  Jesus is stripped of His clothes before being nailed to the Cross
11.   NAILED TO THE CROSS
12.   ON THE CROSS  After a short period of agony, He dies on the Cross.
13.   DOWN FROM THE CROSS  In Christian art, it is common to depict Christ lying
             in His Mother's lap.
14.   CRYPT  Christ is placed in the tomb. The stations are usually finished with the scene
             depicting the "Resurrection".
